What is breast cancer?

Cancer of any kind can be deadly if not treated on time. Cancer happens when a mutation occurs in genes that regulate cell growth leading to an abnormal and exponential division of cells.

Breast cancer is cancer in the breast. It is the most frequent cause of death in women and is the second most frequently occurring cancer after skin cancer. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women affecting 2.1 million women every year. Male can also get breast cancer but it is far more common in women.

Types of breast cancer

Breast cancer has two main categories i.e invasive and non-invasive. Invasive cancer can spread from the breast to other parts of the body, while non-invasive remains confined to its origin. Major types of breast cancer are given below. Have a look!

  • Ductal cancer:

When breast cancer starts from the duct carrying milk to the nipple, it is called ductal cancer.

  • Lobular cancer:

When cancer starts in the glands producing milk, it is called lobular cancer.

Other types of breast cancer include phyllodes tumor and angiosarcoma which are less common


  • Appearance of lump
  • Dimpling of the skin
  • Change in color of breast
  • Breast pain
  • Nipple discharge
  • Swelling
  • Inverted nipples

Causes of breast cancer

Researchers have identified several lifestyles related, environmental, biological, hormonal causes of breast cancer. Let’s check them out, shall we?

  1. Inherited breast cancer:

If any woman has a family history of breast cancer, the chances of breast cancer are high. According to the researchers, 5 to 10 percent of breast cancer may be linked to the gene mutations that can pass through generations.

 2. Age Factor:

The chances of having breast cancer increase with the increasing age. The percentage of breast cancer is higher in women over 50 years of age who have experienced menopause.

3. Obesity:

Being overweight enhances the risk factor for breast cancer. Postmenopausal women who are also obese have a 20 to 40 % chance of developing breast cancer as compared to women of normal weight. 

4. Exposure to radiation: 

Some medical treatments require exposure to radiations such as x-rays, laser treatment, CT scan. If a person’s chest area has ever been exposed to ionizing radiation of such kind, then there are possibilities of acquiring breast cancer.

Other causes of breast cancer are breast biopsy, breast lumps, first pregnancy after 30 years of age, consumption of alcohol, exposure to estrogen.

How to cure breast cancer

  • Consult with doctors about a suitable time for breast screening, so that if there is any possibility or risk of breast cancer, it can be removed with timely treatment and precautions.
  • The use of fruits, green vegetables, and low calories food should be increased and junk food should be avoided. 
  • Exercise and active life are very important for a healthy and fit body. Obesity is the mother of all illnesses. So bodyweight should be maintained to avoid breast cancer.
